Behind the Drywall: What Older Whitehorse Homes Need to Know About Aluminum Wiring and Panel Capacity
If your home was built between the mid-1960s and the late 1970s, there’s a decent chance something unexpected is running through your walls: aluminum, not copper. It’s one of those details that never comes up until a renovation, an insurance renewal, or a home inspection puts it on the table — and by then, most homeowners have questions nobody’s given them straight answers to.
Here’s the straight answer: aluminum wiring isn’t automatically a hazard, and it isn’t automatically fine either. What matters is what’s happening at the connection points, and whether your electrical system was ever properly assessed for it. Let’s walk through what it is, why it became common in Yukon housing stock, and what a responsible upgrade path actually looks like.
Why So Many Whitehorse Homes Have It
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, copper prices spiked hard enough that builders across North America — including a good chunk of the homes going up in Whitehorse during that era’s growth — switched to aluminum for branch circuit wiring. It was cheaper, it conducted electricity just fine, and at the time it met code.
The problem showed up later, and it wasn’t really about the aluminum itself. It was about how aluminum behaves differently from copper at every connection point: switches, outlets, breakers, and splices. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper with temperature changes, which matters a lot in a climate that swings from -40°C in January to +25°C in July. Over years of that cycling, connections that were torqued down properly in 1974 can loosen. A loose aluminum connection oxidizes, oxidized aluminum resists current flow, and resistance means heat. That’s the actual failure mode — not the wire failing in the wall, but a termination point slowly heating up somewhere you can’t see it.
How to Tell If Your Home Has It
You can’t tell from the outside of the house, and you shouldn’t need to open up walls to find out. A few starting points:
- Check your panel. If your electrical panel or the visible wire jacket is stamped “AL,” “ALUM,” or “Aluminum,” that’s your answer. Copper is unmarked or stamped “CU.”
- Check your build date. Homes built or majorly rewired between roughly 1965 and 1978 are the highest-probability range. If your home has had a full rewire since then, this may not apply at all.
- Watch for warning signs, though absence of symptoms doesn’t mean absence of risk: warm faceplates on switches or outlets, flickering lights that aren’t tied to a specific appliance, or a faint burning smell near outlets with no obvious source.
None of these are DIY diagnosis tools — they’re reasons to book an assessment, not reasons to start pulling cover plates yourself. Aluminum wiring is exactly the kind of thing where a five-minute professional check saves you from guessing.
The Panel Capacity Problem Hiding Behind the Wiring Question
Here’s the part that often gets missed: homes from the aluminum-wiring era were also typically built with panels sized for the electrical loads of the 1970s — 60 to 100 amps was standard. That was plenty for a furnace fan, a stove, and a black-and-white TV. It is not plenty for a modern Whitehorse household running electric heat supplementation, a heat pump, a hot tub, or — increasingly — a Level 2 EV charger.

Not every home with aluminum wiring needs a full rewire, and a full rewire isn’t always the recommended fix — but it does need a real plan, not a workaround. The legitimate remediation paths, roughly in order of scope:
- Copper pigtailing at connection points. A certified electrician splices a short length of copper wire onto the aluminum conductor at every device — outlets, switches, breakers — using connectors specifically rated and listed for aluminum-to-copper transitions (not just twisted together and taped, which is not code-compliant and not safe). This addresses the actual failure mode — the connection points — without opening every wall in the house.
- Full panel upgrade. Often paired with pigtailing, since you’re already touching the electrical system and it’s the right time to move to a panel sized for modern loads.
- Full rewire. The most involved option, typically reserved for homes undergoing major renovation anyway, or where the aluminum wiring shows widespread deterioration rather than isolated connection issues.
